Ok, to work Portuguese Border Stitch, working top to bottom, begin by bringing your needle up at 1, down at 2 and up at 3 and down at 4. Continue working a ladder of straight stitches for as long as you want your border to be.
Starting at the bottom of your ladder change to a blunt needle and bring your needle up at 5 just below the bottom rung and slightly to the right. Next pass your needle under the second rung of your ladder and back under the first rung without piercing your fabric. Create another two vertical stitches in this way. Then pass your needle under the second rung of your ladder only as shown in the picture below.
Next pass your needle under the third rung of your ladder and back under the second rung, your needle should emerge to the left. Then pass your needle under the third rung only as shown below without piercing your fabric. Work in this way all the way up your ladder of' foundation stitches. When you reach the top insert your needle into your fabric at 6 and fasten off the thread.
Now to work the opposite side bring your needle up at 7 and make stitches to match, Slanting your stitches up the right side of the band. When you reach the top of your border insert your needle at 8 and fasten off your thread.
